Hi! I'm Mikaela "Mika" Dela Cruz. Presently, I am a junior at Garnet Valley High School in Pennsylvania. I have a strong passion for writing and I have ambitions to pursue a career regarding social change, whether that be through law, politics, writing, and more.
I take pride in being a Filipino American as my background has had a huge impact on my way of life. I am lucky to have spent the majority of my childhood surrounded by love, family, and life-long friends. Growing up the eldest and the only daughter, I learned what it took to care for two little boys. At the age of seven, I was cooking dinners and cleaning the house.
I would not be the person that I am today had it not been for every individual I have ever met, as I have a tendency of adopting qualities I admire from each interaction.
Interests
Music has always had a prominent place in my life. Dad's side of the family consists of musicians--guitarists drummers, and singers. My passion for music began with the release of Alicia Keys' "No One," and at the age of six, many days were spent belting her lyrics at the top of my lungs. Furthermore, my musical endeavors expanded through the violin, guitar, and ukulele.
Another interest of mine happens to be writing. In particular, I have always adored creative writing. I'd say my favorite part of words is power--the way that you can evoke any emotion through stringing them together has always fascinated me. This passion has improved my public speaking and confidence and I hope to continue writing in the future.
A huge interest of mine is advocacy. During my freshman year of high school, I joined a club called, "HERE," which stands for Humanity in Ethnicity, Race, and Equity. Little did I know that this club would change my life completely. HERE allowed me to educate myself on racial issues affecting America. I reflected on myself; my experiences and contributions. Through awareness, I have gained a sense of empathy and purpose that inspires me to continue similar work in a future career.
Skills
I'd say I've acquired a few skills from the many hobbies I've adopted as a child--in a creative sense, I am great with music, creating jewelry, creating art, embroidery, and a little bit of crochet.
Communication-wise, I'm practiced in presenting/public speaking. Having gained multiple officer positions in my high school clubs, I have gained an understanding of what it takes to be an efficient and respectable leader.
Goals
Overall, my one goal is to make an impact. I want to leave a mark on the world. I want to know that my life made a difference no matter how big or small. That said, I will continue to make connections, build relationships, and contribute to the improvement of society wherever life takes me.
